And here's a nuno felted scarf in process. Nuno felting combines wool with another fiber in an open weave, such a silk or cotton gauze, using soap and water to bind the fibers together for incredible texture and design possibilities. I'm so excited to be pursuing something soft and warm and to give my hands a break from metal. As shiny and fascinating as it is, the sharp, cold, hardness of metal appeals to me very little in the colder months.

New Direction

Inspired by an upcoming fashion show/benefit, I made some bangles with stainless steel and gemstones.

And I'm superexcited about these birds~ I'm working on scarves, hats, and tiny bags that would be perfect for a cellphone or medicine bag, all from recycled wool sweaters with bits of antique lace and buttons.

Lots happening in the sunroom studio these days, especially now that garden season has quieted down. Hopefully I can get some photos up of some pieces for the fashion show following the Marshall Handmade Market. Big, copper, felt, lots of reds...very different than my usual work. And of course, more jellyfish and pods and twigs and leaves and birds.

Seven other women from the Marshall High Studios and I have been hard at work opening and now running a new gallery in our sweet little town. And we just heard the governor will be visiting us next week~ how exciting!!

I am proud to announce that a portion of proceeds from the honeybee wholesale line is now going to help support the honeybees. The bees are vital pollinators and without them, we'd have little to eat.
Our friend at Wild Mountain Bees is supplying us with everything we need to get started with our own hive.

After years of deliberation, months of planning, and many weeks learning Adobe Illustrator, my wholesale catalog is finished and on its way to shops and galleries throughout the Carolinas (and if you're a wholesaler buyer and would like a copy, just send along your contact info to amymooredesigns (at!) gmail.com).

In the meantime, I've been honing a few ideas for extra special custom designs, all of which involve preserving treasures and heirlooms in unique settings. Clients send me their treasures and we work together to create a setting to help preserve them. They'll be listed later this spring on my website and can be purchased in my Esty shop.

I've made rings and cuffs from bits of lace that turned out beautifully. The process involved making a mold in clay from the lace and then making a relief model out of metal clay, which is then cast in sterling silver for strength and durability. Oxidizing the silver enhances the delicate details. And what an incredible way to preserve a favorite swatch of lace!

The other pieces are pendants that can hold tiny treasures~ one is a setting I use for bits of sea glass, river stones, pottery shards, or any special object that is somewhat flat in shape. The other piece is created with a basket weave and shaped like a flower pod, encasing a small treasure or a few treasures. As long as they're no larger than a macadamia nut, they'll fit inside the woven pod.

Now that the computer is working again I have a pile of new work to get photos of. For now here are a few little treasures I made while taking a break from the internet.

I love how the wild phlox pod turned out.

The bird and cage theme keeps flying back around my brain, complete with memories of the late friend who was my inspiration...

The earrings are from a new series I've been working on of vinelike earrings with lots of spirals and loops.

And a little family of baby poplar leaves made by painting fine silver slip on leaves, layer after layer after layer, which I could spend hours making with no complaints.

My new space in the barn where I've been making trellises and baskets and drying herbs. Through the slats in the floorboards I can watch the chickens and goats!
I'll have to get a picture out of the window to show the view of the ironweed and wild sunflower field.

Copper Clay Fern Cuff, round 1

This is a rough version of a cuff I'm working on~ the copper clay is a brand new material and it started to bubble and melt during firing because my kiln has no kilnsitter and therefore cannot be set to a reliable temp. However, I see lots of potential.
The final version of this cuff will be set with 5 stones. I'll be sure to post a pic when it's done.

Studio Update

It's been awhile since I've posted anything about what's happening in my studio, so here's the lowdown on what I'm up to (when I'm not obsessively digging and planting in my new garden, painting pictures of chickens with my 4 year old, and cooing at our new ducklings). I miss writing, so I'm hoping to use this space to ramble about anything vaguely creativity-related in my life, as well as keep interested parties apprised of new designs and various online appearances.

After moving home and studio in December, I discovered that high speed internet was simply not available at the new place, so last month I caught wind of a studio space in amazing Marshall, NC, a nearby riverside town and budding artist mecca (more on that later- Marshall deserves a post all its own...actually, here's a great blog devoted to some of Marshall's happenings). So I moved again and have been so much more productive, not to mention thrilled about being back in the land of high speed internet.

My main project, after painting over the band-aid flesh peach of the studio with a soothing deep green, has been developing a wholesale line and print catalog which should be ready to launch in May. It feels like a huge and necessary step, and my dream is that by taking on wholesale accounts, I'll have more time to carry out the myriad of new designs constantly spinning through my brain and create more one-of-a-kind treasures. Sewing books and clothing out of recycled materials is another passion I've started to get back into after a 2 year hiatus spent building Honeybee. And knitting! I'm slowly building a collection of hats, scarves, and armwarmers to launch next fall, all made of natural fibers and recycled sari silk.

Somehow, in between all of this, I'll be tending a pretty big garden plot and a flock of ten laying hens. And maybe a goat or two. Maybe. Really, though, creating a more self-sustaining lifestyle is the fuel I need to inspire my work, so I'm incredibly excited to be taking all of this on.
